Do you have to use ST capital losses to Offset LT Gains?

Example: you have $50 of ST losses and $100 of LT Gains. If you offset to a net $50 LT gain, you forego the advantage of sheltering future ST gains, which are taxed at a much higher rate. Question: in this example, can you elect to not use the ST loss, pay tax on the full $100 LT gain, and carry forward the entire $50 ST loss?

The dollar and yen were mainly gainers to start, but the dollar’s strength fizzled during the European session. The Euro also continues to position strongly.
